Before Getting Started

Before beginning the process of completely renovating your garage floors, be sure to repair the main surface first. Certain materials like epoxy and paint can damage the floor underneath if not taken care of properly before hand. This should be a priority before starting!

A big issue is typically moisture – you should always handle condensation first as this can be very detrimental in the long run. Consider tearing up the entire foor and replacing it completely if any of the following issues are present:

● Massive cracks around the floor most likely caused by changes in the weather.

● Your garage door threshold needs to be repaired.

● The floor in your garage chips or has other wear and tear.

● The floor looks as if it’s sinking into the ground.

● The floors have stains, damage, and other problems.

● You don’t like the way it looks anymore.

If any of the above issues are occurring, it might be time to replace the entire floor area. If not, simple upgrades and easy changes can be made – there is no need to tear up the entire floor! Let’s read about some options below.

Idea #1 - Epoxy

It’s easy to get epoxy confused with paint as they are both often applied the same way. But, they are two very different things! Paint dries through the process of evaporating the moisture in the substance, while epoxy hardens after a chemical reaction occurs. Epoxy can create a very smooth finish and add an element of sophistication to any garage space.

There are big differences between epoxy and epoxy paint. Epoxy paint contains a small amount of the substance, so it is different from normal paint. This means that it doesn’t have the same performance as true epoxy. Before adding it to the floor area, epoxy will need to be mixed with resin in order for the hardening reaction to occur.

Idea #2 - Paint

Paint is a great option if you are looking to cover stains created by oil or grease. Typically paints are oil-based or latex paints. They’re available in satin, non-slip varieties that are very durable and resistant to different materials often used in the garage. This is a great option for spaces that are used very frequently.

It’s common that some types of latex paint will include epoxy and resin. This material makes the floor very resistant to stains and also is a great way to have a hard finish on the floor. Be sure that the chosen paint is made to be applied to concrete, this will work best on a garage floor.

Epoxy and paint are very similar and it is recommended that they both be applied directly to the garage floor.

Idea #3 - Tile

Tiles often come in wood, plastic, or other materials. This is a great way to add a touch of professionalism and color to your space. Consider tile in your garage if you’re looking for a major change!

Tiles are a great way to fix an uneven floor and they are also strong enough to support any type of vehicle, which is great in the garage setting. The tiles are installed to be slightly raised above the surface – so watch your step!

● Tile can be made of plastic – typically polypropylene or PVC. It’s not uncommon for companys to also offer ways to finish the outer ares of the installation areas.

Rubber tile is very easy and soft to walk on and is often found in residental areas and other places like daycares.

● Another option is wood composite tiles. They are small but can support tons of weight, which is what makes them a great option for flooring inside a garage. These tiles easily connect together to ensure a smooth surface in your space!

Tile looks amazing and is a great option for those looking to really make a change. Think more about your goals and what you want in your space before deciding between tile, paint, or epoxy.

Option #4 – Floor Mats

Flooring mats are a great solution if you’re looking for something easy to maintain or if you plan on moving in the near future. Mats are great for those looking for something temporary. It’s common for these mats to be made of rubber or plastic. Mats are often used to cover up areas that are damaged or stained. This option is great for those who work at lot in the garage as the clean up and upkeep of flooring mats is easy. They can protect your concrete from any further stains, moreso than paint or even epoxy.
